Καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κολούμπια. Στα ελληνικά κυκλοφορεί το έργο του Η σαγήνη των Συρακουσών σε έκδοση της Athens Review of Books (τίτλος πρωτοτύπου: The Reckless Mind: Intellectuals in Politics). Είναι συγγραφέας, ανάμεσα σε άλλα, των βιβλίων: The Stillborn God: Religion, Politics, and the Modern West (2007), G.B. Vico: The Making of an Anti-Modern (1993). Τα πιο πρόσφατα έργα του είναι τα Ignorance and Bliss. On Wanting Not to Know (2024), The Once and Future Liberal (2017) και The Shipwrecked Mind: On Political Reaction (2016).
