Minister against himself ‒ at the expense of others

[….] Although memoranda affect all social activities, there is always room for a different policy in some fields, such as books. The National Book Centreof Greece has closed. The uniform book price, which was also a campaign demand by SYRIZA, has not been brought back. Acting in good faith, I sought to find SYRIZA’s policy on books.

“Anagnoseis”, the Sunday insert about books of the Greek newspaper Avgi, objectively placed SYRIZA in a privileged position to write an exemplary policy on books.

The judicial scandal in the case
“The Minister for Foreign Affairs vs The Athens Review of Books”

FOR THESE REASONS
I propose the acceptance of the first, second, and third grounds of
appeal and the rejection of the rest.
Athens 14th October 2016

The Judge-Rapporteur of the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court of Greece
Penelope Zontanou

Having proposed, with arguments spanning 13 pages backing her legal view, that the three main grounds of appeal be accepted, and after the hearing of the case having been conducted on the basis of that proposal, the Judge-Rapporteur of the Supreme Court , without explanation, voted against herself.

Kotzias intimidates Professor Thanos Veremis

The Foreign Minister of Greece sent Professor Veremis on August 29, the following threatening text through his lawyer. It is obvious that he did not change views and methods, since the time he served the propaganda of Honecker and Jaruzelski. His position of power has made his situation worse.

Dear Mr. Veremis,

At the request of my assignor, Mr. Nikos Kotzias, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, I am asking you a question and I would like a response on your behalf.

The Greek Foreign Affairs Minister moved to shut down the monthly Athens Review of Books newspaper

kotzias-ARB

On 24 July 2017 the Greek Foreign Minister Mr. N. Kotzias froze the bank accounts of the publisher of the The Athens Review of Books (ARB) and impounded the proceeds of the sales from its distributary company.

During the past years, Mr. N. Kotzias, has used the Greek judiciary to wage a vindictive campaign against the ARB — the Greek equivalent of the The New York Review of Books.

Minister’s court win intensifies fears for rule of law in Greece

Syriza accused of interfering in case and eroding independence of judicial system

by: Kerin Hope in Athens
(Μετάφραση στα ελληνικά μετά το τέλος του παρόντος άρθρου)

Fears for the independence of the Greek judicial system are mounting after the foreign minister won a court order freezing the bank accounts of a leading magazine over a reader’s letter describing him as a former “fanatical” Stalinist.

The ruling in favour of Nikos Kotzias has drawn sharp criticism from academics and public figures, who say it violates EU law on freedom of expression. It also highlights broader concern over perceived interference in the justice system by the leftwing Syriza government.

The concerns widened beyond Greece last week when senior eurozone officials warned the government that the continued prosecution of Andreas Georgiou, its former statistics chief, over claims he inflated the size of the country’s budget deficit in 2009, threatened to drive a wedge between Athens and its euro area creditors.
